SARDA (SA’s Riding for the Disabled) Constantia took up the gift wrapping reins at The Constantia Village during December 2009, under the supervision of current chairlady, Belinda Thom Bain, who landed the challenging task of wrapping 6 soccer balls as pre-2010 World cup Christmas gifts.
Gift wrapping has never been the same since! SARDA’s volunteer team of Christmas wrappers has grown considerably, as has their income from this project. Last Christmas was an all-time record – they raised over R20 000 with no overheads, thanks to the generous support of The Constantia Village. They supply everything – from ribbon and wrapping paper to scissors and sellotape. Over the years, SARDA has become experts at wrapping things of all shapes and sizes, from easels, surfboards and giant teddy bears to packets of biltong and even plane tickets!
Their happy helpers include local scholars and volunteers from as far afield as Sea Point. They have customers returning year after year to have their gifts wrapped in exchange for a small fixed charge, all of which goes towards SARDA’s Therapy in Motion to keep their riders riding. For SARDA, this feeling of goodwill is an extension of what they are about.
Life at SARDA is about rising above challenges. Their 11 well-cared for equine therapists are much loved by approximately 200 riders per week with varying special needs, who receive free, therapeutic riding lessons at the SARDA Centre in Brommersvlei Road, Constantia. They also have two vaulting classes per week.
